IPL Photo Rejuvenation

Updated: Jan 15, 2022

What is IPL Photo Rejuvenation

Photorejuvenation is a skin treatment that uses intense pulsed light therapy to treat skin conditions and help to remove the effects of photoaging. The light energy is absorbed into target cells with colour (chromophores) in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy, which causes damage to the specific target area. This process induces controlled wounds on the skin, prompting it to heal itself by creating new healthy cells.

What can IPL be used for?

  • Lightening and blending pigmentation on the face & body

  • Improvement of skin texture

  • Reducing redness, rosacea, dilated blood vessels and “broken” blood vessels on the face, neck and chest

  • Evens skin tone discolouration

What can I expect during my visit?

Our aesthetician will explain the process to you and clearly define your expectations of the treatment. They will tell you whether the results you are looking for will be achievable using this method.

It is important that the correct diagnosis has been made by a doctor prior to treatment. Our General Practitioner has a dermatology diploma and can perform a skin check if necessary.

A topical anaesthetic may be applied to the area but is not usually necessary.

A cold gel is applied to the area being treated. IPL devices often have integrated cooling systems.

The smooth, glass surface of the IPL treatment head is applied to the skin, delivering precise pulses of light to the area being treated.

Treatment sessions usually last about 20 minutes. A course of 4-6 sessions every 3-6 weeks may be needed to achieve desired results.

You are advised to avoid sun exposure for several weeks prior to treatment

After effects

Most patients can return to work immediately after the procedure. Immediately following the procedure, you may feel as though you have a mild sunburn, though this feeling will subside within twenty-four hours. Depending on the condition you are treating, your experience will differ. For example, if you are treating acne with IPL your skin may remain red for several days before you notice an improvement. If you are seeking to stimulate collagen growth, the redness may disappear sooner, and you will begin to see a smoother skin texture within a few days.

You must wear SPF 50 and avoid sun exposure for several weeks after.

The results should be visible within a day to a few weeks. Results are cumulative so if you have a few treatments a few months after your last treatment would show you maximum results.
